In this course, you will learn the key skills required for trad climbing. By the end of the course, you’ll be equipped to climb trad routes independently.
We begin by looking at guidebooks and route selection, ensuring you can make informed decisions when choosing climbs. You will learn about climbing gear, including what to keep on your harness and in your backpack, focusing on the appropriate equipment needed for safe climbing.
Next, we progress to placing gear, evaluating the quality of placements, and building safe, robust anchors. You’ll also learn essential ropework and belaying techniques, with the goal of getting you on the sharp end, climbing your first trad route on lead.
Finally, we cover basic problem-solving and rescue techniques to prepare you for any emergencies that may arise during a trad climb. This course aims to provide a comprehensive foundation in trad climbing practices, enabling you to approach climbing with confidence and safety.
Prior Experience: Some previous climbing experience and a good level of general fitness required. Participants should already be operating at the level of a competent second.

In this course, we’ll help you develop your ‘head game,’ empowering you to trust your gear and climb with assurance. Together, we’ll focus on tactics for successful onsight or redpoint climbing, refining your gear placements, and learning to stay composed under pressure.
For 1:2 sessions, we’ll coach you alongside your regular climbing partner, using a separate rope. While you climb, I’ll be right beside you, offering tailored advice and techniques. We’ll focus on addressing specific issues as they arise, including advanced ropework and strategies to help you climb harder and with more confidence.

Tying off a belay plate and escaping the system
Lowering in guide mode
Passing a knot while abseiling or lowering
Using prusiks to ascend a rope

This course is ideal for aspiring Mountain Climbing Instructors (MCIs) and Rock Climbing Instructors (RCIs), as it provides practical, hands-on experience in managing climbing emergencies.
Prior Experience: You should be confident in seconding routes graded Diff or higher and have a solid understanding of how to build secure anchors at the top of a crag or pitch.
